What you need to build a 3D printed pool fountain
Most designs here are built around a cheap submersible pump (the kind sold for desk fountains and aquariums). You'll typically need:
- A small submersible water pump — 3W–6W is plenty for a tabletop or pool-edge fountain.
- Watertight filament or a sealing step — PETG handles water and sun far better than PLA. For PLA prints, seal them with epoxy or a few coats of waterproof varnish.
- Some flexible tubing to connect the pump to the fountain head.
PLA or PETG for outdoor water features?
For anything that sits in sun and water all summer, reach for PETG or ASA. PLA looks great but softens in heat and slowly degrades outdoors — fine for a shaded indoor fountain, risky on a hot poolside. Print water-facing parts at higher wall counts (4+) and 30%+ infill to reduce leaks.
