I have discovered the secret to Print-in-Place joints and hinges: it's bridging! So I'm posting here to share this discovery.
Basically what you do is you make a piece with a cylindrical hole in it, then ypu put a cylinder through the hole with some clearance, and finally you attach that rod on either end to a support.
The slicer (I use Slic3r) is smart enough to recognize that as a bridge and will simply bridge the gap! The result is a joint or hinge.
