My camera (Canon PowerShot SX120) can be full controlled via USB (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/PtpCamGui).
To make better macro photos, I use the 3Drag frame as camera tripod, controlled via Repetier.
Here the camera frame mounting, that I built starting from a ballhead found in a little tripod from China (3.90 €).
As you can see in photos, it can be used 2 ways: orientable, with ballhead or fixed, more stable.
This thing uses modules defined in the library fast-clamp http://www.thingiverse
