Update 22-07-2016:
I am now using this geared platform with a proper metal bearing (I more or less gave up on printed bearings). I can happily scan at 8800 steps per revolution (1/8 microstepping 0.9deg per step) which produces excellent scans. If you print the gears with the correct extrusion multiplier (adjust to suit your printer) you can get near zero backlash on the assembled turn table.
