I opted not to use a NEMA 17 stepper for my FreeLSS scanner project due to the fact that I have several of the 28byj-48 stepper laying around. The 28byj-48's can be converted to a bipolar using these instructions written by Jangeox @

Once the conversion to a Bi-Polar is complete, a A4988 stepper driver can drive these motors quite well. Thus making it possible to use them with the original FreeLSS design.
