The 14-bis, also known as Oiseau de Proie (French for “bird of prey”) was an aircraft built by Brazilian inventor Alberto Santos Dumont who on November 12, 1906 won the Archdeacon Prize and the Aeroclube Prize of France when performing a 220 meter flight in Paris. The first test of the 14-bis was carried out on July 19, 1906, connected to balloon No. 14. On August 23, the 14-bis was finally tested without being attached to the balloon. After a first run without taking off, on the second attempt the plane lifted off the ground and flew. However, its stability did not please Santos Dumont, who nevertheless declared himself satisfied.
