Lots of the coolest looking microphones from the 1950s, like the Shure 55 "Elvis" series, and the 737A "waffle iron," used a balanced system very similar to the current XLR jacks: the 91-MC3M jacks.
Unfortunately these old mics do not hook up directly to XLR jacks, because the three connecting pins do not line up.
Fortunately, the diameter and length of the pins themselves are identical, and even the pin numbering is the same: "two is hot; three is not."
