The water in the mountain river sang in a hundred voices—from the low rumble of boulders to the crystalline whisper of foam shattering against granite. The air, steeped in moisture and pine, felt thick as resin, yet Saelihn breathed it easily, merging with this world in a single rhythm. Her feet, clad in supple leather, knew no slipping; she stood on the wet stone jutting from the torrent like a carving shaped by nature itself.
The bow in her hand was an extension of her will—dry, living vinewood strung with the sinews of a mountain goat. The muscles of her shoulder had not yet tensed before the arrow had already left her fingers, trailing a barely perceptible scratch through the damp air.
In that same instant—silent as the breath of moss—the sharp steel struck true, straight into the orc’s brow. The brute, whose claws had been gouging the edge of a neighbouring boulder, froze for a heartbeat, struggling to register the blow.
