The Drinkwell fountain includes a disposable filter that removes any bad tastes/odors and extracts debris from water, but replacing the filter every 2/3 weeks costs money and it's a pain having to periodically order new filters.This reusable filter uses regular activated carbon sold in pet shops to purify the water of aquariums. I bought 320 g of activated carbon for 6 Euros that allows to recharge 30 times the filter. According to the activated carbon manufacturer, 10g allows to purify 3 liters
