Fruit Cage - Protect a ripening apple

I grew an apple tree for several years before I managed to make it produce fruit. With only a small number of apples ripening, I'm paranoid some critter is going to tear them all off or nibble them. A gentle deterrent seemed in order, so this little force field, or apple death-star seemed appropriate. Should deter squirrels and birds - maybe deer too?
