The Liberty Bell

Two-thousand pounds of copper and tin cast by John Pass and John Stow, the bell was created to commemorate the first reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8, 1776. The crack occurred seventy years later on George Washington's birthday, as a result of a previous imperfection which had been repaired. The bell has since been adopted as an iconic symbol for independence and liberty, and thus termed, "The Liberty Bell."
