This was designed to prevent a micro USB cable from coming unplugged from a Redpark Gigabit + PoE Adapter for iPad (L6-NETPOE). It also acts as a strain relief for the connector.
In an ideal world this wouldn't be necessary - the micro USB cable they supply has a high-quality feel to it, and the plug itself has a decent spring-loaded "grip" on the connector.
