Very useful to prevent things sliding off a rod - there is just enough friction (or tension) to hold the nut in place, and still allow easily removal
The smaller ID ones can be hard to push on the 1st time - I use a spare rod & (reasonably) gently hammer it through the Nut - after that it will slide on & off OK
