This is a holster dock for a pistol holster. There are three versons - a wide one and a narrow one. The narrow one is one that is meant to hold the holster in a car, etc. It holds the holster in place should you need to draw the pistol. The wide one does not retain the holster on the dock when the pistol is drawn (its just a convenient place to put you gun in the holster. The third is has holster retention but has some chamfer to make it easier to insert and remove the holster
