V-shaped pegs may have advantages over skewer pegs, such as a stronger hold and more compact pack size. However, they can literally be a pain to push into the ground by hand. Hammering or pushing them in with your shoe can damage and bend them. A rubber mallet would work well, but who brings such a thing on a hike?
This handy litte "stone" provides a comfortable interface with your palm, and the peg slots into a groove on the bottom so it doesn't slip.
