I use a 25mm dowel support rod above my printer on which any number of spools hang. As they are not standardised, I have had to sketch/print adaptors for them to spin freely round the 25mm rod/hanger. This one is for my latest filament spool the Kexcelled PLA9 Silk from 3DPrintz.
