3D printing is emerging as a powerful tool for tissue engineering application by enabling cell culture within complex 3D biomimetic architectures. All the bio-printers that can be found on the market are for private use and in some cases have an unaffordable cost for laboratories and researchers with a low budget and who need to develop new materials and bio-printing techniques. Furthermore, there are no bio-printers that have a specific design for different types of materials and that can combine the mixed characteristics of a low-cost (< € 5,000) and high-cost (> € 200,000) bio-printer at the same time.
In this project, an open source, low-cost and customizable bio-printer was built in order to bring bioprinting closer together to laboratories with low purchasing power and where the technical requirements of potentially printable materials can be satisfied.
