Pre-calibration is required to make sure the magnet’s north and the indicator part are correctly aligned, since you don't know which side is the north or south pole of the magnet. Not required, but a water-resistant clear coat on the indicator can help keep everything moving smoothly and extend the life of your compass.The top screws on to keep everything secure during travel, and it even has a built-in hook to attach to your backpack or keys.
