One thing I've found to be critical to successful bonding of the initial layers is strongly applied tape. For my initial prints I was simply rubbing the tape down by hand which doesn't bond the tape well, and is likely to leave behind traces of oils from your hands. I switched to using an old credit card to apply the tape and had a lot less issues of the first layers getting a good bond to the bed.
