Adipic acid is an organic compound with the formula (CH₂)₄(COOH)₂. It is a white, crystalline solid that is of immense industrial importance. Although it occurs naturally in beets and sugarcane, these are not economical sources, and it is produced synthetically on a massive scale. About 90% of all adipic acid produced is used as a monomer for the production of nylon 6,6, a versatile polymer used in textiles, automotive parts, and carpets. It is also used to manufacture polyurethanes, plasticizers, and lubricants. In the food industry, it is used as a food additive to provide a tart flavor and as a gelling aid.
