We propose a compact, standalone automatic ventilator that can be 3D printed and assembled at any location using commonly obtainable parts such as valves and tubing. Our proposed design uses a bellows mechanism coupled with a motorized circular crank and slider that efficiently delivers rhythmic forced respirations according to specifications set by caregivers. This design can simply obtain air from the environment like common bag-valve-mask devices, or it can be connected to a gas supply if available. Air delivered to the patient can optionally be attached to a humidifier if available. Pressure sensors in the bellows and flow sensors in the inspiratory and expiratory tracts enable feedback control such as pressure or volume control, pressure support, synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation, and other programmable cycles. Parts will be printable using Stratasys 3D printers and materials. The device can be powered by the included rechargeable battery in cases where an external power supply is unavailable, such as makeshift hospitals.
