Considering the fact that the mop is mainly going to be used for cleaning the sides of the floor around the toilet, I have opted for a rather unconventional L-shaped design. A rather stiff pad – suitably made of relatively hard foam or scrubber material may be used with the cleaning head. This pad is permanent. Over this pad, you use a disposable cloth. I have thought about mechanisms that might suit the attachment and removal of such a disposable cloth, but I don’t think any of those might be as reliable and cheap as using a Velcro tape attachment. There are six spots where the Velcro tape attaches the disposable cloth firmly to the cleaning head. The disposable cloth thus prevents and damage to the pad above it (and the stiff pad is permanent). The mop head is attached to the handle by a ball-socket type joint, which would allow for a large degree of freedom, suitable for cleaning in tight spaces. The mop is retractable to about half its full length. To reduce the mop length, the top part of the handle is rotated about a 180 degrees and pushed down. To lock it in place, the upper handle is again twisted 180 degrees. This upper handle slides on a rubber lining in the lower handle during retraction or elongation to allow smooth motion but at the same time offering good grip so that it does not slide out of its position during cleaning. Below is a detailed explanation. The numbers correspond to the parts indicated by one of the renderings above. 1. Ball-bearing joint: This ball bearing connects the lower part of the handle to the mop head. It allows a large degree of freedom allowing the mop to reach through tight spaces. The angle of freedom at the ball bearing is maximum at the four slots cut across. The whole joint arrangement may be made of plastic or even stainless steel if it’s meant to be a more premium product. 2. Pad: This pad is meant to be permanent. It may be stuck with a strong adhesive to the stainless L-shaped steel plate or any other suitable means. Th
