I've got an old Craftsman chipper/shredder with a 5hp Briggs and Stratton flathead engine on it.
Pulling over the engine with the recoil starter is a pain in the ass, because the engine has a heavy chipper flywheel hanging off it. You have to haul HARD on the starter, in a singlwe pull, to get the thing spinning fast enough to start up - and if it doesn't start, you have to wait for the engine to spin back down before you can try again. I broke a starter cord this spring trying to start the thing, got fed up and came up with this.
And it works pretty decent. My yuppie-grade Dewalt 20V drill has no trouble turning over the engine, and the engine starts right up.
You'll need a 3/8 hex to 1/2" socket adapter to go between this thing and your drill. Make sure your drill is set to clockwise.
As shown, I've got the flywheel guard / recoil starter removed from the front engine cover, which I know isn't safe - I'm going to punch a hole the center of the guard and rivet it back onto
