August 20, target achieved, egg launched 4,7 m and continues alive!!! :) The main idea is construct light structure and deformable in order to absorb the energy of the drop, in any direction. The inspiration, maybe a beach ball. the egg is covered entirely by a primary shell who is suspended by printed springs to the central armor. the external protection is formed by 3 mm ABS printer material and joined by holes at the central armor. All the structure is printed in ABS material. 0,2 mm layer high, infill honeycomb 20%. The total weight (without egg) is 170 gr. All parts can be printed without support material. DESIGN EVOLUTION VERSION 1 Formed by 4 equal pieces shaped like a crescent. In the middle copy egg shape, covering every part ¼ of the total. Together, the four pieces form a rigid cover enveloping the egg. They are joined at the ends by a flange shaped sphere. By a second closure part, with the whole circular shape is fixed. Externally they form a sphere. Between the central cover and the outer shell egg there are thin arms which act as spring. Between the arms are printed a “leafs” of a thin sheet 0.2mm thick having the function of reducing the speed of fall. The outer diameter is 200 mm, the maximum allowed by my printer. The entire assembly is printed with ABS, 0.2 mm layer height and infill honeycomb 30%. For printing I used "soup" (ABS dissolved in acetone) with which I paint the bed who is at 90 °C. With this it is not necessary brim or support material. The total weight without egg is 105 gr. This design does not work. With a drop of 1 m the egg is broken. The spring arms are very stiff, damped little and with impact the egg cover has been opened and broken it. VERSION 2 The outer structure is modified, making it thinner and elastic. I improves bonding system at the ends to better support impact without arms disengage and locking disc are modified with a system that embraces the 4 halves forming the inner cover of the egg.
