Cardiff Castle has a history stretching back nearly 2,000 years. The site was first fortified by the Romans in the 3rd century, who built a stronghold to defend this part of south Wales. After the Norman conquest, a motte-and-bailey castle was established within the old Roman walls, and the impressive stone keep that still dominates the site today was built in the 12th century. Over the centuries the castle changed hands many times and developed from a military fortification into a grand residence. In the 19th century it was transformed by the 3rd Marquess of Bute and the
