coating thickness gauge
coating thickness is measured via the magnetic force, which results from the different distance to the magnet.
if the magnet is closer to the steel, the plunger will pull more out of the sleeve. it cannot be used to measure an actual thickness of paint or other non-ferrous materials. it can be used to determine differences.
simply start at a point where a normal paint thickness is suspected. the plunger will pull out to the 5th or 6th mark and then detach from the sheet. check another point and compare the values. differences in thickness of less than 0.1mm can be detected.
the whole gauge consists of 3 printed parts, a spring and a neodymium magnet (Ø 10x2mm).
the spring should have a wire Ø of 0.5mm, a total length of 29mm and an outer Ø of 7.6mm. smaller differences are ok - but to be tested. only the wire-Ø should not be stronger.
it is best to print the plunger with a light color. then the notches can be colored with a thin marker.
