The great grey guardian wears a strict collar and stands watch where sentries grow weary. Broad-backed and unyielding, he plants himself at dugout mouths and trench turns, teeth bared not in rage but resolve. Enemy scouts learn quickly that silence does not belong to them alone. When the guardian dog growls, the line holds. Smaller, faster dogs serve another purpose. They slip through fire and smoke carrying ammunition, bandages, or a single vial of hope to where a man lies bleeding and unseen.
