A dead simple filament runout sensor.
The bowden version is the one that I have and is tested, and can be fitted using the M4 screw already present on the extruder (see the image).
I haven't tested the direct extruder version. Do let me know if it works (or if it doesn't).
Parts needed:
1 endstop connected in NC (normally connected) configuration.
Cables to connect to your printer board
You'll have to modify your firmware as well. There are plenty of things here that describe how to do it in Marlin. e.g. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2665162
