Made this desk extender kit for my Ikea Desk http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S29932181/#/S29133599
(Mine are green, I guess online version doesn't come in green anymore)
The board is from home depot. I just picked particle board that had a smooth surface and had them cut it down to 2 feet by 16 inches. You can make it as big as you want just lay out the brackets to support the size you want. Then screw the knob into the board.
I use my desk extender on a daily basis because my desk is usually full of crap. It makes it easy to have a eating surface, place to fill out paperwork and it's strong enough to hold a computer I built.
You may want to make six instead of four brackets so the board guides a little better. Four works alright, but sometimes I'm fishing for the back two brackets when I'm pushing the extender in.
