The angled horizontal lip allows litter and stray pee to flow directly back into the litter tray without running into the gap between machine and the barrel. The device is a friction fit on the outside ring at the entrance. Push it on with force and your cats won't easily be able to wiggle it loose, but you can still pull it off for cleaning.
