Dharahara, also known as Bhimsen Tower, is a historic landmark in Kathmandu, Nepal, built in 1832 by Prime Minister Bhimsen Thapa as a military watchtower and a symbol of national pride. The 11-story, 62-meter tall tower, blending Mughal and European architectural styles, offered panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley. Though damaged by the 1934 earthquake and later rebuilt, Dharahara tragically collapsed during the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, causing many deaths. Recognizing its cultural significance, the tower was reconstructed with modern earthquake-resistant features and reopened in 2021, continuing to stand as a testament to Nepal’s resilience and heritage.
