The Diplodocus was a massive, long-necked herbivorous dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period, around 150 million years ago. It belonged to the sauropod group, known for their immense size, pillar-like legs, and elongated necks and tails. Measuring up to 27 metres in length, with some estimates suggesting even greater sizes, the Diplodocus was among the longest land animals to have ever existed. Its name, meaning “double beam,” refers to the distinctive double row of bones found beneath its tail vertebrae, which provided both strength and flexibility. The body of Diplodocus was built for a slow, steady lifestyle, ideal for grazing on vast quantities of vegetation. Its long neck allowed it to reach high into trees or sweep low across the ground, feeding on soft ferns, cycads, and conifers without needing to move its enormous body much. Its small, peg-like teeth were positioned only at the front of its narrow skull, designed for stripping leaves rather than chewing them. Food
