This project centers around a custom-designed 3D model that adapts the lens from a Kodak Funsaver disposable camera to a Sony E-mount mirrorless system. The model was developed from the ground up with a strong emphasis on achieving the correct flange focal distance, enabling the tiny plastic lens—originally never meant for reuse—to deliver surprisingly usable images on a modern digital sensor. The design includes a precisely dimensioned E-mount interface that securely locks onto the camera body, ensuring stability during shooting. A recessed lens seat holds the salvaged lens at just the right distance from the sensor to achieve sharp focus in the center of the frame. Several iterations were printed and tested to dial in this alignment, with careful measurement and hands-on trial-and-error forming the backbone of the process. To ensure image quality, the internal structure of the adapter minimizes light leaks and stray reflections, taking into account the quirks of the lens’s optical path. Despite the simplicity of the original plastic optic, the adapter elevates its performance by giving it a rigid, well-aligned mount. No adhesives or permanent modifications are required; the lens is held snugly by friction and precision fitting alone, allowing for reversibility and further experimentation. What began as a nostalgic experiment became a model that gives new life to a disposable component, turning it into a character-rich lens with a digital twist. The result is a unique fusion of analog aesthetics and digital flexibility—made possible through careful modeling and iterative prototyping.
