I wanted to have a dial indicator to be able to measure how level the print bed is on my Ender 3 machines. There are a few versions out there. What I didn't like about what was available was how they rested on the machine. Most used the metal shroud around the hotend to rest. The problem with that design is the metal shroud is not ridged at all, throwing off the calibration of the dial indicator.
My version works with a stock Ender 3 machine and uses the hotend itself as the resting point. This greatly helps support the holder and achieve stable reading on the indicator.
There are two stl files. One has a location for a nut in the print and the other doesn't. Print what you need.
The dial indicator is a cheap one from Harbor Freight. https://www.harborfreight.com/1-in-travel-machinists-dial-indicator-63521.html
Enjoy!
UPDATE: (5-28-24) added a .gcode file that can be used to move the head, with indicator, around automatically. Just start the file like you would a pri
