I've always used arithmetic progressions to set the height of book cases. You know the tallest shelf on the bottom is 12 inches, the next shelf 11, then 10, and so on. (Msg me if you want an equation.) It is a very effective way to get objects you haven't exactly measured to maximize available storage space.
For this project I decided to try to make a drawer insert and move to a geometric progression in two dimensions. What fun.
