I've got some filament spools for free, but later found out that the diameter is not very consistant. Extruder was jamming on "blobs" of filament larger than 1.9 mm. Rather than measuring the whole spool using a caliper, I created this simple stencil. Then just unrolled the filament through appropriate slit to find and cut off problematic sections. The design uses very little material.
WARNING: This stencil needs to be printed in abrasive-resistant filament. If using regular PLA, it will quickly wear off. Also, your printer needs to be precisely tuned, otherwise the holes will be significantly smaller. Slits are usually OK, though needed to check the real gap dimension using caliper.
