I use large filament spools with a weight of 2 kg and a diameter of 300 mm. The spool is supported by two ball bearings. Because of the high mass and the good bearings the spool tends to unroll itself.
This filament spool brake is simply designed, flexible and works well. The arm is slightly bent and adapts to the radius of the filament spool. The arm must be printed with support. A felt slide (chair felt pad protector) can easily be glued to the cylindrical head. The arm is attached to the base with an M3 x 25 mm screw.
A simple rubber band can be used to vary the clamping force and thus the braking effect.
