Our patio umbrella blew over in the wind. The rib broke right where the support attached. I reinforced the support with a 3/8 inch fiberglass garden stake (support for tomato plants), but a dowel rod or anything strong enough that will fit in there works.
I removed the screw at the bottom of the rib that attached it to the material, put the rod in, and slid it through the hole. I used bolt cutters to remove the rivet that originally secured the support to the rib. That left a hole that I could put a 30mm M3 bolt through with a nut, which I used to attach the support to the wings of the part. You might be able to reuse the washers from the rivet.
It seems like everything fits together pretty loosely, but the stake is long enough to not slide out and the umbrella material keeps the end from falling off. The part hinges on the bolt and lets you lift up the umbrella.
