A Flight Data Recorder (FDR) is an exceptionally durable, crash-survivable electronic device installed in the tail section of an aircraft to continuously log critical performance parameters, such as altitude, airspeed, heading, and control settings, for at least the last 25 hours of flight. Popularly known as a "black box" but painted high-visibility safety orange, the unit utilizes solid-state memory encased in heavy stainless steel, titanium, and thermal insulation to withstand extreme impact forces up to 3,400 Gs, deep-sea hydrostatic pressures, and intense fires exceeding 1,100 °C. Following an accident, an integrated, water-activated Underwater Locator Beacon (ULB) automatically emits ultrasonic acoustic signals to assist recovery teams in locating the device, allowing investigators to extract and analyze the data to reconstruct the sequence of events and improve global aviation safety.
