There are some pliers made to handle this issue but are limited to a size and can damage the motor, there are even some motors the have a special wrench that comes with then that interlocks with the top bell.

The design from 100%EPIC works like a chain strap or oil filter wrench, by using the twisting to help lock the tool in tighter without damaging the motor bell.
