The Gallus was a heavy gladiator modelled on Gallic warriors, fighting with substantial armour, a large shield and brutal weapons that evoked Rome’s early barbarian enemies. To the crowd, every clash of his blade and shield was more than a contest—it was a staged remembrance of the wars in which Rome had first proved its dominion over Gaul.
