This 3D-printed model features the Lawson surface, the only known example of a minimal surface of genus 2 (i.e., with two “holes”) in the 3-dimensional sphere. Originally devised by H. Blaine Lawson in 1970 through reflections and rotations of a fundamental solution to the Plateau problem, it stands as a remarkable milestone in the study of minimal surfaces. Thanks to recent advances by Sebastian Heller and Nicholas Schmitt, who employed Hitchin abelianization techniques, the surface can now be conformally parametrized, allowing for a more precise and elegant visualization. The curves seen on this print illustrate the asymptotic lines of the surface in the 3-sphere—regions where the normal curvature vanishes. I have created a video to accompany this publication on Makerworld, acknowledging Geometrie Werkstatt on IMAGINARY as the submitter and crediting the 3D data modeling by Nicolas Schmitt and Wjatscheslaw Kewlin.Boost MeGive me a coffee
