When I got back into the workforce, I did have to cope with the same kinds of hazards I did in any hospital, particularly radiation (X-rays, only for parts inspection rather than human diagnostics) and volatile organic compounds. I began prototyping a hazard detector badge (the HazBadge) using parts from Adafruit.
This is somehow light enough to be a clip-on badge, albeit a bulky one (it is a prototype after all). The housing holds a PyBadge for the CPU and interface, a MightyOhm Geiger Counter, a volatile sensor, a magnetometer, an accelerometer, and a pressure/humidity/temperature sensor.
The hardware may be good for safety but the software needs some bugs worked out for accuracy. DO NOT DEPEND ON THIS AS A SAFETY DEVICE until it can be thoroughly tested and certified for use.
