THE HISTORYHermes is the ancient Greek messanger of the gods. Hermes is depicted wearing a petasos, the wide-brimmed hat with wings. As the messenger of the gods, Hermes needed speed and freedom of movement, and the winged petasos symbolized both swiftness and divine mobility. Beyond its practical association with travel and protection from the elements, the hat came to embody his role as a guide—whether leading mortals across great distances, delivering the will of the gods, or escorting souls to the underworld as psychopomp. In essence, it reinforced Hermes’ identity as the god who could move freely between worlds—Olympus, Earth, and Hades—faster than any other.
