A hinge is a mechanical component that connects two parts, allowing them to move relative to each other, typically through rotational movement. It consists of several key parts: the **pin**, a metal rod that acts as the pivot point; the **leaf**, flat plates that attach to the objects being joined; and the **hole**, which allows the pin to rotate within the leaves. The hinge works by being attached to the two parts you want to connect. When one part moves, the pin rotates in the hole, allowing the two parts to move relative to each other. There are different types of hinges based on movement, including **pivot hinges** (allowing rotation around a single axis), **folding hinges** (enabling folding or collapsing), **sliding hinges** (which provide sliding movement along with rotation), and **ball hinges** (which allow movement around multiple axes). Hinges can also be made from various materials, such as **iron** (strong and durable), **brass** (corrosion-resistant and aesthetically pleasing), **plastic** (lightweight and easy to shape), and **stainless steel** (highly corrosion-resistant and strong). These materials make hinges suitable for a wide range of applications, including **doors**, where they connect the door to the frame; **windows**, where they attach the sash to the window frame; **furniture**, such as cabinets and folding tables; **electronics**, like laptops and mobile phones; and **vehicles**, such as car doors and hoods. Hinges are essential components that provide functionality and durability in many everyday products.
