Hnefatafl, meaning “King’s Table,” is an ancient Viking strategy game popular from 400 to 1000 AD across Northern Europe. It simulates a Viking raid, with a smaller defending force protecting their king from a larger attacking army. The game faded as chess gained popularity.
Rules: Hnefatafl is played on a square grid (typically 11x11). Defenders (12 warriors + the king) start in a cross shape at the center, while attackers (24) surround the edges.
Objective:
Defenders: Help the king escape to one of the four corners. Attackers: Capture the king by surrounding him on all four sides. Movement: Pieces move like chess rooks—horizontally or vertically.
Capturing: Surround enemy pieces on opposite sides.
