I was looking for a small project for my students to work on and found a small inexpensive electronic thermometer sitting next to my computer. I grabbed the screw driver, opened it up and created an assembly in Creo 2.0. This was modeled using a top-down approach so the STEP file will have a "Skeleton" part that was used to drive all the sub-components. I give the students some basic renderings and CAD files of the PCB, battery, and contacts. They are expected to develop detailed plastic parts for the housings and provide me with a drawing package and CAD data of the assembly. The components they create should be completely moldable with all required draft and rounds. The renderings were made in 3DS Max. I used this assembly to teach myself how to use 3DS Max. I'm going to be teaching my students to create basic animations using the software. As an aside, 3DS Max is great. It is easy to learn and start creating basic renderings, but has an amazing amount of depth for creating extremely complex renderings and animations. It was able to read the STEP file created in Creo without any issues.
