Inobtrusive Pole Base/Holder

I'm making a carousel hat and needed a smaller base for the pole and something to hold it on the top.
The top holder is a bit big and keeps it from moving left and right, but has no real "grip" on it so to speak. It's like fencing rather than a screw hole. It's actually kinda ugly.
The base is literally the base cut off on the bottom, no other changes.
Designed for: poles sized up by 1378.42% (I think, or it was 1382.05% but it shouldn't make a big difference) and the horse I used (misty) by 1403.81%.
Just publishing this cause I'm making a blog post for the making of the hat.
