Daofu" is one of China's traditional auspicious items. It involves pasting the character "福" (meaning "fortune") upside down on homes during the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year). This practice is called "daofu" because it implies that fortune is arriving. Even in Japan's Chinatown areas and Chinese restaurants, you can often see this character near the entrance regardless of the season. However, while people understand the meaning of "fortune," they are often confused about why it is pasted upside down.
