I had an inexpensive kneeboard (pic attached) that came with an integrated clipboard but no easy way to hold an iPad.
I bought a case from Telaso for an iPad mini (A17) that has an integrated magnet in the back.
The adaptor is designed so that a quad utility box blank cover (steel and cheap at any home supply store) is epoxied over the empty slot. When the iPad/case are put into the adapter, the magnet adheres to the plate and holds things in place.
The slot in the 3d print is positioned to match a locking strap that is on the kneeboard. This keeps whatever is mounted to the clipboard flat.
The adapter has a bar extrusion at the top that fits snugly under the clipboard spring clip to keep things from sliding or rotating.
The 4 bumpers just keep the iPad case snug and square. They are probably bigger than needed but I was going for sturdy.
I printed this with PETG for some heat resistance and a little flex. I printed it with 60% infill and it's pretty solid.
